Give Up These Things To Become A High-Achieving Person

We often hear quotes such as “Giving up is not the option” or “Don’t ever give up” which generally implies that quitting is the shortest way to failure. Sometimes, however, to become successful and get closer to the person we can become, we don’t need to add more things — we need to give up on some of them. Here are the top 10 things to be eliminated from your path to a more prosperous life.

   1. Give up on the unhealthy lifestyle

Do you feel tired, sluggish, and unmotivated? Does the thought of trying to improve your eating and exercising habits just seem so much?

If you want to achieve anything huge in life, you have to take care of your health first. There are two critical things you need to always keep in mind: a healthy diet and physical activity. Quitting unhealthy habits starts with small steps, but gradually you will thank yourself one day.

   2. Give up the short-term mindset

Successful people set long-term goals, and they know that these aims are merely the result of short-term habits that they need to do every day. These healthy habits shouldn’t be something you do; they should be something you embody. There is a difference between: “Working out to get a summer body” and “Working out because that’s who you are”.

   3. Give up quick fixes and shortcuts

Building something lasting and meaningful won’t happen overnight, and you should stop expecting it to. Real change happens gradually, and one habit at a time. Rather than trying to exert enough willpower to change something 100%, focus on how you can do 1% better each day, and over time, the effort will compound.

   4. Give up your excuses

Successful people know that they are responsible for their life and career, no matter their starting point, weaknesses, and past failures. Realizing that you are responsible for what happens next in your life is both frightening and exciting. And when you do, that becomes the only way you can become successful, because excuses limit and prevent us from growing personally and professionally.

   5. Give up the fixed mindset

Robert Greene, a famous American author wrote in his book, Mastery: “The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways”.

People with a fixed mindset believe their intelligence or talents are simply fixed traits, and that talent alone creates success  -  without effort. They’re incorrect. Successful people know this. They invest an immense amount of time daily to develop a growth mindset, acquire new knowledge, learn new skills, and change their perception so that it can benefit their lives. Remember, who you are today, it’s not who you have to be tomorrow.

   6. Give up distractions

Everything that isn’t supporting you move forward or build a career you’re proud of is simply a distraction. Whether this means streamlining your wardrobe, decluttering your home, parsing down on your project load, or even downsizing your social obligations, eliminating distractions is absolutely essential.

   7. Give up the need to be liked by everyone

Nobody is universally liked, largely for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with them. You are going to be liked by some, loved by others, criticized by a handful, and disliked by a few despite what you choose to do with your life. Therefore, it makes the most sense to not wasting your time minding why some people have such negative views on you. Do your best at what you desire regardless of how other people will respond.

   8. Give up your need to do everything yourself

You are not meant to take on every role, job, and responsibility in your life. High achieving people don’t inundate themselves with work, they hire the right people, streamline and surround themselves with experts who can handle what they are not best equipped to. You are not stronger for refusing to rely on anyone else, you’re wasting your energy and weakening your potential.

   9. Give up ignoring your feelings

Your anger? It’s telling you where you feel powerless. Your anxiety? It’s telling you that something in your life is off-balance. Your fear? It’s telling you what you care about. Your apathy? It’s telling you where you’re overextended and burnt out. Your feelings aren’t random, they are messengers. And if you want to go far, you need to be able to let them speak to you, and tell you what you truly need.

   10. Give up the toxic people

People we spend the most time with, add up to who we become. Some people are less accomplished in their personal and professional life, and some people are more accomplished than us. If you spend time with those who are behind you, your average will go down, and with it, your success. But if you spend time with people who are more accomplished than you, no matter how challenging that might be, you will become more successful. Take a look at around you, and see if you need to make any changes.

Bottom Line

Achieving great goals in both your professional and personal life is not easy at all. Getting extraordinary achievements requires a strong commitment and lots of sacrifices, which includes giving up on certain negative things. You can give up on some of the things above today, while it might take a bit longer to eliminate others. But overall, if you genuinely want to climb the ladder faster, know what won’t do any good for your growth and commit to getting rid of them from your life.
